THE PROVENCAL KNIFE

Did you know that Provence is also famous for its folding knives?

A folding (also called pocket) knife is an essential at aperitif time, when you’re out for a snack in the fresh air with friends or to taste the best products from the Provencal markets. The pocket knife is a staple of the Provincial way of life.

You cannot travel to the south without seeing them on sale at the markets or in cute little shops as you wander into the villages of Provence. As I grow up, I’ve also learnt that the pocket knives are personal as they age with you gaining character over time. I have fond memories of my dads sharpened stainless blade and noble olive wooden handle he would proudly use at meal times.

This is why when it was my turn to choose I decided to go with the liner olive Bastidon.

Created by Patrick Romieu in 1999, the Bastidon knives are made in France according to the traditional know-how of the best Thiers cutlery makers. Simple and authentic, timeless and elegant by the sobriety of its line, the Bastidon is as pleasant to look at as it is to hold. I really like the modern look of their new liner collection; very light and nice in hand, a great upgrade to the traditional rustic folding knife.

They offer a variety of woods to choose from, but of course like my dad, I went for the olive wood, which is famous for its solidity and a Provencal classic.

If like me you are based in London or elsewhere, but still want to experience the Provencal way, they have a very helpful and responsive team as well as an online shop. The real modern way, “à la provencal”!
